This course provides researchers with the knowledge and skills to be able to design and analyze breeding trial data and estimate breeding values. Through a combination of lecture, group exercises, and hands-on activities in R, participants will learn about designs that are especially useful in plant breeding, analysis methods and techniques for single and multi-trial analysis, and breeding value estimation. This course is intended for anyone who analyzes or interprets plant breeding data. The knowledge gained in this course is essential for understanding even more advanced methods such as genomic selection.
Course Objectives - Learn how to identify the most appropriate experimental designs for different plant breeding trials and how these designs are created in R
- Understand the methods used for analyzing single and multi-trial analysis, how these methods are conducted and how to interpret the results
- Learn how to analyze line performance and environment similarity using biplots
- Understand breeding values and their estimation
- Gain experience analyzing plant breeding
Course Content- Introduction to quantitative genetics
- Experimental designs commonly used for plant breeding
- Analysis of single-environment trials
- Analysis of multi-environment trials
- Introduction to biplots
